AGN Youtube Picks: Wes Montgomery, "Four On Six"
Most jazz guitar players know Wes's playing and have studied him intently, but for those of you who are not so familiar with Wes Montgomery, now is a good time to change that. Wes is a rite of passage for jazz guitar players. Along with players like Django Reinhardt and Charlie Christian, Wes is one of the pillars of 20th century jazz guitar and For on six is one of his most famous compositions. how exactly did he manage to play with such speed with his thumb and watch seems to be all down strokes and sweeps. There are some notable Wes Montgomery fans who adopted the same method of right hand technique, the most famous of these being George Benson. Unfortunately we lost Wes at the young age of 45 back in 1968, but it's great to know that that this footage exists as a testament to his greatness and his influence on not only jazz guitarists but all guitarists who followed.
