Wildwoodians, is there anything cooler than a Burst-era Les Paul? Maybe if a polar bear could hit a jump on a snowmobile and do a backflip, it would approach Burst-esque levels of coolness. But, until we humans make tremendous advancements in the field of polar bear training, the Bursts shall reign supreme. Though the original Bursts only lasted from 1958 to 1960, they enjoyed an oversized impact in popular music. Jimmy Page, Joe Walsh, Paul McCartney, and countless other iconic players have all featured the sweet sound of their Les Pauls on dozens of classic recordings. Without a doubt, the Les Pauls produced from '58 to '60 are some of the greatest examples of craftsmanship in the history of musical instruments. Their sound is as American as beer and monster trucks, and they are part of rock and roll's DNA. Since we have the Burst bug bad here at Wildwood, we were overjoyed when we received the 2019 Historic reissue models from Gibson Custom. Once again, the wizard-like luthiers at the Custom shop have outdone themselves. With a combination of premium tonewoods, obsessive attention to detail, old-world manufacturing techniques, and a healthy dose of love and care, they have crafted some of the mightiest Les Pauls ever to grace the mortal realm. Let's take a closer look and examine some of the splendid ingredients that form their sonic cocktail.

Fender first introduced the Stratocaster in 1954, but they didn't really hit their stride until 1955 when they locked in the perfect formula for optimum sonic horsepower and good looks. The Wildwood 10 1955 Stratocasters pay homage to these legendary original Strats by replicating crucial details like the one-ply pickguard, dot inlays, resonant ash bodies, and maple necks. Many have also been lovingly relic'd by the masterful Custom Shop team, so they have oodles of vintage vibe. Nevertheless, they feel every bit as good as any modern guitar thanks to their Wildwood-exclusive 10" radius and 6105 frets. We can talk until we're blue in the face about the plethora of reasons why Jimi Hendrix was the greatest player to ever strap on a Strat. No one has ever matched his blend of virtuosic instrumental prowess, intense emotional expression, Picasso-level attention to the colors and hues in his music, and masterful songwriting, but what really puts him head and shoulders above the rest of every other six-string slinger is his universal appeal. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, loves Jimi Hendrix. Case in point: Ian Mackaye and Stevie Ray Vaughan could not be more different as people or guitarists. Mackaye was the singer and guitarist in legendary post-hardcore band Fugazi (a group about as far removed from the psychedelic rock of the seventies as humanly possible) while SRV was perhaps the greatest master of electric blues since Hendrix himself. Despite their immense musical, philosophical, geographic, and stylistic differences, both listed Hendrix as their favorite guitarist of all time by a wide margin. So, it doesn't matter if you're a punk in a leather jacket laden with safety pins, a metalhead in a Motorhead shirt, a jazz cat with an expensive hat, a classic rocker with a closet full of vintage concert tees, or a regular 'ol non-musician who listens to whatever's on the radio: chances are, if someone asks you who your favorite guitarist is, Hendrix is going to be one of the first names out of your mouth. If you ever ask someone this question and they DON'T drop Jimi's name, report them to the authorities immediately, because they are not to be trusted, and are probably a lizard person or alien in disguise. Facetiousness aside, Hendrix's music seems to resonate with every single human being on a molecular level, and it is hard to quantify how or why. His singular style of guitar playing has a way of forcibly grabbing you by the heart and making you feel all sorts of emotions that don't really have names, and that's the sort of voodoo that defies complete explanation. The reason that no one can replicate his guitar style is simple: more so than any amp or guitar, the contents of his spirit were the key to his magic Spanish castle of sound.

In 1951, Leo Fender changed the world of music forever by introducing the first-ever mass-produced solidbody electric guitar. Leo was going to call it the Broadcaster, but the threat of a lawsuit from Gretsch (who produced a drum set called the Broadkaster) forced him to abandon that plan. Ever the resourceful (and frugal) businessman, Leo simply snipped the word “Broadcaster” off the headstock decal and shipped his nameless guitars out. Since the guitars had no model name, musicians dubbed them “Nocasters.” Because of their incredible rarity, original Nocasters have become some of the most desirable vintage pieces out there. So, we decided to team up with our friends at the Fender Custom Shop and issue a Wildwood 10 version that marries the vibe of the originals with modern ergonomics. The Wildwood-exclusive 10″ radius and 6105 frets are a perfect pairing with the chunky Nocaster U-shaped neck profile, and the Custom Shop hand-wound Twisted Tele pickups deliver spectacular sounds. Lee Roy's signature model is a sight to behold. It features a custom finish dubbed "Abilene Burst" (an homage to his hometown), and it highlights the beautiful grain on the figured maple top. Two underwound '57 classic pickups produce sweet vintage PAF sounds that will inspire you to play for hours and hours. Speaking of sweet sounds, Lee Roy asked Gibson Custom to do something a little different for his signature model: would they put a bit of extra wood in the pickup cavities to give it a bit of extra vintage-style woodiness? They said yes, and it paid incredible dividends. Because of the extra wood, the pickups capture more of the guitar's acoustic character, the guitar feels more responsive, and it has glorious woody midrange that will take you back in time to 1959. The Lee Roy Parnell 1959 Les Paul doesn't skimp on the ergonomic side of things, either. It has a contoured cutaway to allow for maximum access to the upper frets and beyond, which is a godsend for slide players. As fun as it is to take slide solos up past the 22nd fret, you won't want to because the neck is so comfortable. It's a custom '59 profile that Leroy worked with the Custom Shop to create, and it has a lovely chunky feel that makes you want to cancel all your appointments for the day and adventure across the fretboard. Oct 15th, 2020: MasterClass, the streaming platform where anyone can learn from the world's best across a wide range of subjects, today announced that multiple Grammy Award–winning guitarist, singer, songwriter and director, Annie Clark, known professionally as St. Vincent, will teach a class on creativity and songwriting. Taking members behind the curtain of her public persona, Clark gives an intimate look into her artistic development, from how to effectively generate ideas to how to pursue a project to completion. Annie Clark debuted her musical persona, St. Vincent, in 2007 with her debut album, Marry Me. In this episode, Fab interviews Blues guitar legend, Josh Smith. Blues rock guitar virtuoso, singer-songwriter and producer, Josh Smith, is hailed the world over as a master guitarist with raw talent and power to spare. Blending his signature mix of blues, rock and jazz into dynamic original songs, Smith is known for his incendiary live performances, whether at the Grammy Awards or the Kennedy Center Honors with Mick Jagger, Raphael Saadiq and others. Born in 1979, Josh started playing guitar at age six. Praised as a blues prodigy by the time he was 12 years old, he began playing at professional blues jams in South Florida, sitting in with such greats as Jimmy Thackery, Tinsley Ellis, Kenny Neal, Lucky Peterson, Matt “Guitar” Murphy, Johnny “Clyde” Copeland, Double Trouble, Joanna Connor and Kim Simmonds, among others. Jimmy Thackery said of the 14-year-old, “Josh is three heartbreaks away from being a true blues guitar genius.” That insight from Jimmy Thackery proved true as Josh began releasing CDs at age 14. His first national tour with his power trio, Josh Smith and the Frost, featured Josh as bandleader, vocalist as well as guitarist. The legendary producer Jim Gaines (Santana, SRV, Luther Allison, Steve Miller, Jimmy Thackery) produced Josh’s third CD, Too Damn Cold and Woman. By 1998, he had completed four national tours with his band. Josh was then asked to support the great B.B. King on a number of shows. Opening for B.B. King was just the beginning for this in-demand artist and lead guitarist for artists such as Taylor Hicks, Ricky Fante (Virgin Records), Raphael Saadiq, actress Taryn Manning, Universal Music Group hip-hop artists Benny Cassette and Tara Ellis, and more. He has the distinction of inducting Neil Diamond into the Kennedy Center Honors with Raphael Saadiq’s band and honoring Solomon Burke at the Grammys with Mick Jagger. Within a year of moving to L.A. in 2002, Josh was retained by Virgin recording artist Ricky Fante and performed nationally and internationally with Ricky for the next two years. In 2006, Josh recorded his fifth CD, Deep Roots and continued to play with a variety of artists such as actress Taryn Manning, Universal Music hip-hop artists Benny Cassette and Tara Ellis, to name a few. In 2007, Josh was hired by 2006 American Idol winner Taylor Hicks to be his lead guitarist. They completed two national tours before Josh was hired as lead guitarist by Grammy Award winner Raphael Saadiq. Josh continues to tour with Saadiq. In 2009, Josh released his 6th studio CD, Inception and in 2010 he was signed to Crosscut Records based in Germany. Crosscut re-released Josh’s breakout album, Deep Roots as I’m Gonna Be Ready. In 2013, Josh’s CD Don’t Give Up On Me was also released in Germany, followed by Over Your Head in 2014. In 2016, Josh’s jazz album, Still was released to critical acclaim as was Burn To Grow in 2018. Along with touring the world, recording and performing with renowned artists such as Joe Bonamassa, Eric Johnson, Andy Timmons, Kirk Fletcher and others, Smith is also a producer and owns Flat V Studios in Los Angeles. He has produced artists Reese Wynans (Joe Bonamassa), Artur Menezes (winner of the Eric Clapton 2019 Crossroads Festival) Seth Rosenbloom, Jamey Arent and many more. Josh’s latest and 11th album, Live At The Spud, was released January 8, 2020 on Flat V Music, and features Smith and his power trio recorded live over two nights at the legendary Baked Potato in Los Angeles. The new album features Smith on guitar and vocals, Gary Novak on drums and Trevor Carlton on bass. The goal was to present an unedited look at a normal night at the Baked Potato. Compelling, improvisational and explosive. Josh is currently touring worldwide in support of the live album. Josh lives in Los Angeles with his wife and son.
